What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is the body’s way of telling you something isn’t quite right. It keeps you from harm’s way and prepares you to act quickly in the face of inherent danger. If anxiety becomes persistent, it can interfere with your regular daily activities or even make them impossible. General Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is the most common type of anxiety, but several anxiety disorders exist. Anxiety disorders may develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.
Anxiety can look and feel different for everyone. Some common symptoms include:
• Feeling nervous, restless, or tense
• Increased heart rate
• Impending sense of danger, panic, or doom
• Hyperventilation (breathing rapidly)
• Sweating or trembling
• Trouble concentrating
• Inability to stop thinking about present worry
• Gastrointestinal (GI) problems

Researchers are learning that anxiety disorders run in families, and that they have a biological basis, much like allergies and other disorders. Anxiety disorders may develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events.
No — generalized anxiety disorder, also known as GAD, is characterized by persistent, excessive, and unrealistic worry about everyday things. People with this disorder experience exaggerated tension, often expecting the worst, even when there is no apparent reason for concern. They may be overly concerned about money, health, family, work, or other issues.
Anxiety, or general anxiety, is a normal reaction to stressful and uncertain situations. It’s your body telling you to stay alert and protect yourself.
Four major classes of medications are used in the treatment of anxiety disorders:
•SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors)
•SNRIs (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors)
