Break Free from Allergies

As the seasons change and flowers start to rebloom, many of us are eager to welcome the warmer weather and longer days. However, for some people, this time of year brings a less-welcome companion: seasonal allergies. Approximately 81 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with seasonal allergies. Seasonal allergies, also known as hay fever and allergic rhinitis, are an immune system reaction to airborne particles like pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds.

You might have seasonal allergies if you experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Sneezing: Frequent sneezing fits are a hallmark of seasonal allergies, triggered by exposure to allergens like pollen.
  • Congestion or runny nose: The nasal passages may become congested or produce excess mucus, leading to a runny or stuffy nose.
  • Fatigue: Allergies can leave you feeling tired and drained, as your body expends energy combating the allergens.
  • Itchy eyes: Irritation and itching of the eyes are common, often accompanied by redness and watering.

It can be overwhelming to deal with allergy symptoms when you’re trying to work and go about your daily life. Here are some tips to manage seasonal allergies at home:

  • Monitor pollen levels: Stay informed about local pollen forecasts.
  • Keep doors and windows closed: On high-pollen days, keep windows and doors closed to prevent allergens from entering your home. Consider using air purifiers to reduce indoor pollen levels.
  • Clean regularly: Regular cleaning, including vacuuming and dusting, can help minimize indoor allergens. Frequent showers also help rinse pollen from the skin and hair.
  • Avoid gardening or lawn mowing
  • Separate clothes worn outside from the inside of your home
  • Masks are good for protecting the airway
  • Over-the-counter medications can provide relief from allergy symptoms including: antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal corticosteroids. Consult with your healthcare provider for appropriate recommendations.
